A S$160m revamp ends Otaku House's 17-year run at Plaza Singapura

After 17 years at Plaza Singapura, the anime retailer closes on Aug 16, 2026, ahead of the mall's S$160m revamp — the chain's other outlets carry on.

What happened

Otaku House had been part of Plaza Singapura for 17 years — the chain's second outlet, which began, in the store's own retelling, with a sketch submitted to the mall and a lion dance at the opening. It sat in the top-floor row of toy stores, selling figures, plushies, collectables and anime merchandise.

On 9 July 2026 the shop announced on Instagram that 16 August would be its last day, and opened a Moving Out Sale with 40 per cent off storewide. The cause was structural: CapitaLand, which manages the mall, is renovating the entire Level 7 — every tenant on the floor is moving out — as part of a S$160 million revamp running in phases from the third quarter of 2026, reconfiguring retail and dining units across several levels.

Otaku House is one face of a wider wave of tenant departures ahead of the works. The chain itself survives: outlets continue at Jewel Changi Airport, PLQ Mall and Suntec City, with a new store due at SingPost Centre. What is gone is the seventeen-year Orchard Road address.

Why it happened

  • CapitaLand chose to renovate Level 7 as a whole, so the floor's tenants left together — tenure was not part of the reconfiguration.
  • A mall revamp reallocates space to whatever the next ten years are meant to look like; a 17-year-old anime shop did not fit the new plan.
  • The store had no say in the timing: the announcement came five weeks before the last day.

The lesson

When a mall rewrites its floor plan, tenure buys nothing: Otaku House spent 17 years on Plaza Singapura's toy row and closes on 16 August 2026 — the S$160m revamp clears the whole floor.

Aftermath

Otaku House's Plaza Singapura store trades its last day on 16 August 2026. The chain continues at Jewel Changi Airport, PLQ Mall and Suntec City, and plans a new outlet at SingPost Centre. Plaza Singapura's S$160 million phased revamp starts in the third quarter of 2026.
