Myssyfarmi was a Finnish knitwear darling — 20 years of losses ended in bankruptcy

What happened

Myssyfarmi was a Finnish design company founded around 2006 in Pöytyä, Southwest Finland. It became internationally known for its hand-knitted wool hats, scarves, and hoods made from Finnish sheep's wool, knitted by a network of elderly knitters known as 'Myssy grandmothers'. At its peak, the company employed over 100 pensioner knitters and sold its products in international shopping centers.

Despite its popularity and media attention, Myssyfarmi never achieved profitability. In its last financial year, the company reported turnover of approximately €700,000 against a loss of €260,000. The brand faced years of financial difficulties compounded by supply chain disruptions from wars, flight bans, and energy crises. Efforts to cut costs led to declining sales volume, creating a downward spiral.

In January 2026, Myssyfarmi began a liquidation sale. On February 26, 2026, the company filed for bankruptcy with the District Court of Southwest Finland. CEO Anna Rauhansuu stated the company had exhausted all options to stay afloat. The closure marked the end of a 20-year Finnish fashion story built on traditional craftsmanship.

Why it happened

  • Myssyfarmi's hand-knitted production model was inherently low-volume and high-cost — each hat was made by a pensioner knitting by hand, which could not scale to the volumes needed for profitability
  • The company never solved the tension between its artisanal brand story and the economics of fashion retail — customers loved the story but would not pay enough to cover the cost of hand-knitting
  • External shocks — wars, flight bans, energy crises — disrupted supply chains and added costs that a €700K revenue business with €260K losses could not absorb, pushing it from struggling to terminal

The lesson

A beautiful brand story does not pay the bills. Myssyfarmi's hand-knitted hats were beloved, but the unit economics of artisanal production at fashion-retail prices never added up.
