What happened
Moonfall was director Roland Emmerich's return to the alien-disaster genre, a $150 million spectacle about the Moon knocked out of orbit. Lionsgate released it in February 2022.
The film opened February 4, 2022, and grossed about $67.3 million worldwide — $19.1 million domestic and $48.2 million internationally.
With a production budget of $150 million, Emmerich's own highest-cost project, the film needed roughly $350–400 million just to break even. It landed at less than half its budget, making it one of the year's biggest commercial failures.
Why it happened
- A $150M budget on a genre Emmerich had already mined repeatedly offered nothing new to justify the cost.
- The pandemic-era theatrical market and the formulaic premise failed to open a January/February tentpole wide enough to matter.
- A weak domestic opening and tepid word-of-mouth meant the film never built the international momentum big disaster films rely on.
The lesson
A familiar director's known formula still has to earn a blockbuster budget — 'same again' does not pay for inflation.
