Matsuoka Sewing (松岡縫製), Yamagata knitted-underwear workshop, bankrupt in 2026

Matsuoka sewed knitted underwear in Yamagata since 1973 — a parent collapse and one customer moving offshore turned its ¥277M peak into ¥62M of debt.

What happened

Matsuoka Sewing was a workshop in Funagata, Yamagata Prefecture, founded in November 1973, sewing and finishing knitted underwear (meriyasu underwear) for outside orders.

Sales peaked at about ¥277 million in the November 2000 period, but the business had to shrink after its parent company ceased operations in 2007, forcing a sale of the factory and a move of its head office.

The company kept going at reduced scale until a major customer shifted its production overseas and orders deteriorated. With the workshop unable to continue, it stopped business by 16 January 2026, and on 9 April 2026 the Yamagata District Court, Shinjo branch, commenced bankruptcy proceedings with liabilities of about ¥62 million and 22 employees.

Why it happened

  • A parent that collapsed beneath it: when Matsuoka's parent company ceased operations in 2007, the workshop had to sell its factory and relocate, permanently cutting the scale it could operate at.
  • One customer carried the future: the business never recovered its breadth, so when a major customer shifted production overseas, the orders that remained shrank until there was nothing left to stitch.
  • A half-century of stitching with no brand of its own: as a pure contract workshop, Matsuoka had no product or customer base to fall back on once its anchor order left.

The lesson

A contract workshop that shrinks and never rebuilds is finished when its one big order leaves: Matsuoka's 52 years of knitting ended in a ¥62M bankruptcy.
