MardiMercredi was Korea's it-streetwear brand in China — then it closed everything

Korean streetwear brand MardiMercredi entered China in 2022, opened stores, and by October 2025 shut all physical locations and its mini-program shop.

What happened

MardiMercredi, a Korean designer streetwear brand popularized by K-drama and K-pop culture, entered China in 2022 and opened its first physical store in August 2023. The brand quickly built a following among young Chinese consumers drawn to Korean fashion trends. By 2025, it had multiple stores and a WeChat mini-program ecommerce channel.

In October 2025, MardiMercredi announced it would close all physical stores in China by October 31, 2025, and shut down its mini-program shop on the same day. The brand cited 'offline business optimization and adjustment' as the reason. The China operations were managed by Mandoa Shanghai Brand Management.

The exit reflected a broader trend: Korean fashion brands struggled to maintain momentum in China's hyper-competitive streetwear market. The initial K-culture novelty faded, and consumers shifted to domestic Chinese streetwear brands or more established international labels. MardiMercredi's China adventure lasted barely three years from entry to full withdrawal.

Why it happened

  • Korean streetwear's novelty in China was inherently time-limited — once the K-drama and K-pop wave that carried MardiMercredi subsided, the brand had no other moat
  • China's domestic streetwear brands offered similar aesthetics at lower prices with faster supply chains, squeezing Korean imports from both the fashion and margin sides
  • MardiMercredi was too small to command the marketing spend needed to stay relevant — it depended on organic K-culture buzz that the brand itself could not sustain
What it costAll China stores closed, mini-program shut, 3-year exitcostly

The lesson

A brand that rides a cultural wave into a new market must build structural advantages before the wave breaks. Once the novelty is gone, the stores go with it.
