Maanesten's German arm grew too fast, into insolvency and store closures

Danish jewelry chain Maanesten expanded in Germany with big flagship stores, filed for insolvency in December 2023, and closed most of its branches.

What happened

Maanesten is a Danish jewelry brand that grew quickly in Germany, opening large city-center stores. The German arm operated more than nine branches nationwide, including three in Hamburg (Mönckebergstraße, Alsterhaus, Bleichenbrücke) plus stores in Berlin and Munich. It employed around 30 people in Germany.

At the end of December 2023, Maanesten Germany GmbH filed for insolvency at the Insolvenzgericht Hamburg. Proceedings were opened in early March 2024, with lawyer Peter Volkmann of the Kanzlei für Insolvenz- und Sanierungsrecht appointed administrator. Employees had been receiving insolvency money from the Agentur für Arbeit for the previous three months.

The Hamburg stores were cleared out and closed, as were the Berlin and Munich branches. The Danish parent kept only the Nuremberg store and an outlet in Wertheim, and said it planned a new Hamburg location. Volkmann's verdict on the failure: "Maanesten ist in Deutschland schnell gewachsen und hat viel Geld in große Läden investiert" — the chain grew fast in Germany and invested a lot of money in large stores.

Why it happened

  • The chain grew quickly in Germany and invested heavily in large flagship stores, carrying expensive city-center rents (the administrator's own diagnosis)
  • The pandemic hit store traffic just as the expansion peaked
  • Restrained consumer spending during the Ukraine war and inflation meant fewer jewelry purchases to cover the fixed costs
What it costArm insolvent; most of 9+ stores closed, 30 jobs gonecostly

The lesson

Growth paid for with flagship stores is a bet the boom never ends. When it faded, rents arrived before customers did — the administrator's verdict: grew fast, spent too much on big stores.
