Valencian sportswear brand Luanvi collapsed after its founder died in Spain's deadliest flood in decades — the company entered insolvency months later.

What happened
Luanvi was a Valencian sportswear brand that dressed top Spanish sports teams for over five decades — it made kits for Valencia CF and Valencia Basket for more than 15 consecutive seasons, the last being 2024/2025. The company operated as Textil Deportivo Valencia SA, based in Paterna (Valencia).
On October 29, 2024, founder and CEO Vicente Tarancón died in the DANA flood, Spain's deadliest natural disaster in decades, which killed over 200 people in the Valencia region. His body was recovered on November 10. In January 2025, his son Javier Tarancón was named CEO to lead the company through the crisis.
By July 2025, the commercial company filed for voluntary insolvency before the Mercantile Court No. 2 of Valencia. A purchase offer from Torqueva SL would have subrogated only 46 of approximately 100 workers — the workers' committee rejected it as a grave setback to labour rights. The Luanvi brand was saved through a license and distribution deal with Revolution Sport, but the operating company was lost.
Why it happened
- Vicente Tarancón had been the heart of Luanvi for decades — when he died in the October 2024 DANA flood, the company lost the person who held its relationships, direction, and institutional knowledge
- His son Javier took over in January 2025, but the sudden leadership vacuum and the founder's death destabilised the company, which entered voluntary insolvency within six months
- A purchase offer that preserved only 46 of ~100 jobs was rejected by workers, and the brand survived only through a license deal — the operating company was liquidated
The lesson
When the founder is the business, there is no succession plan that fits in a drawer. Luanvi died because the person who made it run was gone.
