The Last Voyage of the Demeter — a $45M Dracula story that grossed $21.8M

Universal and DreamWorks spent $45M on a shipboard Dracula chapter; it grossed $21.8M worldwide — under half its budget.

What happened

The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the single chapter of Bram Stoker's Dracula in which the vampire sails to England aboard a doomed merchant ship. André Øvredal directed, and Universal, DreamWorks, Reliance and others financed it on a reported $45 million budget.

It was released in the United States on August 11, 2023, and bombed: worldwide gross reached only $21.8 million, with $13.6 million from the US/Canada.

The film recovered under half of its production cost before marketing and distribution, and it became another costly miss for Universal's push to mine horror and public-domain horror icons into recurring franchises.

Why it happened

  • Universal financed a bleak, one-location horror film whose entire appeal was a single famous chapter, and no amount of dread could stretch that into a wide-release draw.
  • The R-rated, slow-burn tone clashed with the mass audience a $45M horror release needs, landing it in a genre where only a break-out reaction covers the cost.
  • Releasing the grim chapter out of narrative context gave audiences no hook — it was a Dracula film with no vampire 'star' moments to sell.

The lesson

A famous literary chapter is not a film: Universal spent $45M stretching one grim Dracula segment into a feature, and it grossed under half its budget because the premise had no room to grow.
