What happened
Horizon: An American Saga — Kevin Costner's four-part western epic — was the actor-director's decades-long passion project. The first two chapters carried a combined budget of $100 million, of which Costner personally funded $38 million, mortgaging his ranch to raise the money. Warner Bros distributed Chapter 1 on June 28, 2024.
Chapter 1 opened to $11 million, finishing third behind Inside Out 2 and A Quiet Place: Day One, and closed with $29 million domestically and $9.7 million overseas — $38.7 million worldwide against its $50 million budget. Reviews were lukewarm, and the film's box office spelled disaster for the four-part plan.
In July 2024, Warner Bros pulled Chapter 2 from its scheduled August 16 release. The completed sequel was left without a theatrical date — the clearest possible verdict on a self-financed gamble: Costner's $38 million bought a film that grossed $38.7 million, and the rest of the saga went into limbo.
Why it happened
- The release model was four films on faith: Chapter 1 had to carry the cost of a saga nobody had seen, and an $11M opening meant the follow-ups were dead before they shipped.
- Costner's personal money removed the brakes: with his ranch mortgaged and no studio risk, there was no voice to stop the plan.
- The film's old-fashioned scope had no modern audience: a three-hour, multi-chapter western needed the event-movie crowd, and Chapter 1's opening weekend showed the audience had other plans.
