Grupo Bimbo: the name that came from Bambi and Dumbo
The founders combined two Disney movie names because the founder's daughter liked them. Bimbo became the world's largest baking company, name and all.

What happened
In 1945, five Mexican entrepreneurs founded a bread company in Mexico City. They started with 34 employees, selling cellophane-wrapped bread. The company needed a name. The candidates included PanRex, Pan NSE, Sabrosoy, Pan Lirio, and Pan Azteca. None of them stood out.
The founder, Lorenzo Servitje, asked his daughter Marinela for suggestions. She was a fan of two Disney movies: Bambi and Dumbo. She combined them into 'Bimbo.' The name had no strategic meaning — it was a child's mashup of two cartoon characters. The founders liked it and chose it over the other candidates. The Bimbo Bear mascot was created the same year, inspired by a bear on a Christmas card.
The company grew. It expanded across Mexico in the 1950s, entered the US market in the 1980s, and began a global acquisition spree in the 2000s. Through acquisitions like Mrs Baird's, Sara Lee, and Canada Bread, it became the world's largest baking company. The name that had no strategic meaning became a household name across 33 countries.
The founders later discovered that 'bimbo' is Italian slang for children (shortened from bambino), and that the Chinese word for bread (miànbāo) sounds similar. None of these meanings were planned. The company operates in over 33 countries with 137,000 employees, 13,000 products, and revenue of $17 billion. A name chosen by a child became the identity of the world's largest bakery.
Why it happened
- The name Bimbo was a child's mashup of two Disney movie characters (Bambi + Dumbo) — not a strategic branding decision.
- The name was chosen from a list of serious candidates (PanRex, Pan Azteca, etc.) — the founders picked a child's suggestion over all of them.
- The founders had no idea 'bimbo' had meaning in other languages — the Italian slang and Chinese homophone were discovered later.
The lesson
A child's mashup of two Disney movies became the world's largest baking company. The founders picked a daughter's suggestion over serious candidates. The name had no strategic meaning but it worked.
