Amazon cut Good Omens' final season to one 90-minute episode after Gaiman's allegations
Abuse allegations against the showrunner cut Good Omens' renewed final season to a single 90-minute finale.
Amazon Prime Video · 2024-10-24
What happened
In September 2024 Amazon paused production on the third and final season of Good Omens, which was shooting in Scotland. The pause followed abuse allegations against Neil Gaiman, the show's creator and showrunner.
Weeks later the decision was made permanent in reduced form: instead of a full final season, Amazon would make a single 90-minute series-ending episode, with production resuming in early 2025. The finale would proceed without Gaiman as showrunner.
The cost to Amazon was a flagship adaptation cut down: a renewed season written off and reshaped around a creator it could no longer use. Disney had paused its film adaptation of Gaiman's The Graveyard Book less than a week before the Good Omens halt, a sign of how fast the industry treated his projects as a liability.
Why it happened
- Amazon bet a flagship series on Gaiman as creator and showrunner, so his person was the show's risk surface: when allegations hit, the renewal became unusable.
- The pause bought time but the show was never going to resume as planned: cutting to one episode let Amazon keep the finale and its subscribers without keeping the creator.
- The adjacent pauses — Disney's Graveyard Book, the industry's reaction — made a full season untenable: the cost of finishing the show as written was worse than the cost of shrinking it.
The lesson
A renewal is a bet on its creator: the six-episode final season became one 90-minute episode once Gaiman was the problem. The bigger the creative's role, the more the project shrinks when they fall.
