Golden Village's 28-year Plaza Singapura cinema goes dark for the mall's revamp

Opened 1998, GV Plaza Singapura screens its last film on August 16, 2026 — six halls end on August 2 — as the mall's S$160 million revamp begins.

What happened

Golden Village Plaza Singapura opened in 1998 and became one of Singapore's best-known cinemas — a long-standing institution inside the mall and a meeting point for anime fans and community screenings over nearly three decades.

On 1 July 2026 the operator announced that the cinema would close on 16 August, citing the mall's 'major revamp', and wind down in phases: six halls held their final screenings on 2 August, with the remaining halls running until the last day. Plaza Singapura and The Atrium @ Orchard are undergoing a S$160 million upgrade, with works scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2026.

Golden Village has no confirmed plans to return to the mall; it directs moviegoers to GV Cineleisure, GV Bugis+ and GV Funan — part of a network of 16 GV locations. The farewell ran from 1 July to 16 August: 10,000 free popcorn or Coca-Cola vouchers for ticket buyers, and a 'Share Your GV Plaza Memories' contest whose winner receives a private screening at GV Cineleisure for up to 60 guests.

Why it happened

  • The mall's asset enhancement reallocates the cinema's footprint along with everything else around it — the revamp decides, not the tenant's years.
  • A multiplex is an anchor whose rent and area are easy to re-let once the landlord redraws the floor plan.
  • Golden Village left the question of a future at Plaza Singapura open: no confirmed return plans, only nearby alternatives.

The lesson

Anchor tenants age out of the floor plan too: Golden Village ran its Plaza Singapura cinema for 28 years and screens its last film on 16 August 2026, for a S$160m revamp with no return planned.

Aftermath

Golden Village Plaza Singapura closes on 16 August 2026. The operator has no confirmed plans to return and points customers to GV Cineleisure, GV Bugis+ and GV Funan. Plaza Singapura's S$160 million phased upgrade starts in the third quarter of 2026.
