New Line spent $180M on a trilogy-starter and shelved the next two films indefinitely

The Golden Compass grossed $370M-plus worldwide, but a weak $70M US take amid marketing controversy was enough for New Line to drop the sequels.

What happened

New Line Cinema adapted Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, starting with The Golden Compass, on a production budget of about $180 million, explicitly planning two further films to complete the story across a multi-year franchise.

Marketing faced sustained controversy from religious groups over the source material's themes, complicating the film's promotional campaign in the crucial US market even as international marketing proceeded largely unaffected.

The film earned a strong $370-375 million worldwide, but its US domestic total came to only about $70 million against the $180 million budget — a weak enough performance in New Line's most important market that the studio put the two planned sequels on indefinite hold, a decision the 2008 economic downturn later hardened into cancellation.

Why it happened

  • The studio committed to a three-film plan before the first installment had proven it could clear the domestic bar the budget required.
  • Marketing didn't develop a strategy to manage religious-themed controversy before it affected the crucial US opening.
  • A strong international gross masked a domestic shortfall that mattered more to the studio's own profitability calculation.
  • No contingency plan existed for pausing the franchise gracefully once the sequel math stopped working.

The lesson

A franchise plan built on a worldwide number can still fail if the studio's own math runs on the domestic share alone.

Aftermath

The planned sequels never entered production under New Line, and the His Dark Materials story was later adapted instead as a television series by the BBC and HBO, unconnected to the 2007 film.
