Fyre Festival was announced again in 2025 — same organiser, $1.1M tickets, no festival

The festival that never happened was announced again in 2025 — same organizer, tickets up to $1.1M, and again no event

What happened

In February 2025 Billy McFarland announced Fyre Festival 2 — May 30 to June 2 on Isla Mujeres, Mexico — with tickets from $1,400 to $1.1 million for the top tier. The original Fyre Festival had been the decade's defining disaster: luxury tents that never arrived, cheese sandwiches, and a federal fraud conviction for its founder.

On March 4, 2025 the Isla Mujeres tourism board said the festival “does not exist”: no permits had been requested or granted, and the promotional coordinates pointed to open water. McFarland answered in a video: “First, Fyre 2 is real. We have accommodations. We have talent.”

No artists were ever announced. On April 16, 2025 — six weeks before the date — McFarland postponed Fyre Festival 2 indefinitely, said the team “could not deliver”, and promised refunds.

The sequel repeated the original's pattern exactly: sell first, build never. Ticket buyers and the tourism board got the same experience as 2017's attendees — a festival that existed only in its own marketing.

Why it happened

  • The product was announced before it existed: tickets went on sale with no permits, no venue contract and no artists — the same sequence that sank Fyre in 2017.
  • The host destination was never asked: the Isla Mujeres tourism board learned of the festival from its promotional material and denied it in writing.
  • The promotional coordinates pointed into the ocean, making the gap between promise and plan measurable and public.
  • A fraud conviction for the same failure did not constrain it: the identical pattern repeated within months of the announcement.

The lesson

The playbook did not change: Fyre 2 was announced first, and permits, artists and a venue never materialized — “an event that does not exist”, again.
