Two chemists announced cold fusion at a press conference before anyone could check it

What happened
On March 23, 1989, two electrochemists — Martin Fleischmann of the University of Southampton and Stanley Pons of the University of Utah — held a press conference to announce that they had achieved nuclear fusion at room temperature. In a simple tabletop experiment, they said, passing current through heavy water and a palladium electrode had produced 'excess heat' and traces of nuclear byproducts, far more energy than chemistry could explain. If true, it promised near-limitless clean energy from seawater.
The problem was the order of operations. The two had agreed with a rival researcher, Steven Jones, to publish their results in a journal at the same time; under pressure from the University of Utah to stake a claim, Fleischmann and Pons went to the press first, bypassing peer review. Newspapers around the world ran the story. Then laboratories everywhere tried to repeat the experiment — and, with few exceptions, could not reproduce the excess heat.
The momentum collapsed within months. Failed replications piled up, methodological flaws were found in the original work, and later in 1989 the US Department of Energy concluded the evidence did not make a convincing case for a useful energy source and declined to fund it. 'Cold fusion' became a byword for pathological science — a result that feels true, attracts a devoted following, and never survives independent checking. A small community still works on it today under other names.

Aftermath
Cold fusion is now the canonical cautionary tale about announcing before verifying, taught in research-integrity courses alongside other replication failures. The term itself became so stigmatized that researchers in the area rebranded it as 'low-energy nuclear reactions' (LENR). The US Department of Energy reviewed the field again in 2004 and reached the same conclusion. The episode's durable lesson is procedural: extraordinary claims need ordinary verification first, in the right order.
