CJ Funshop, Korea's iconic vertical commerce platform, closed after 23 years

Funshop, CJ ENM's specialty mall that pioneered Korea's kidult e-commerce since 2002, shut down in March 2025 crushed by Chinese rivals AliExpress and Temu.

What happened

Funshop was a pioneering Korean vertical commerce platform launched in 2002 with the concept of a 'toy store for adults.' It carved out a unique niche in Korea's e-commerce market by curating kidult, hobby, and collectible products — from designer toys and figurines to premium stationery and lifestyle gadgets. It built a loyal community of enthusiasts who valued its distinctive product selection and curated discovery experience.

In 2017, Funshop was acquired by CJ ENM through its subsidiary Brandworks Korea (formerly Artworks Korea). Despite significant investment, the platform struggled as the e-commerce landscape shifted. The rise of Chinese e-commerce giants AliExpress and Temu eroded Funshop's price competitiveness on imported goods, while Coupang dominated general e-commerce with faster delivery. CJ ENM announced the service termination effective 1 March 2025, after the company failed to find a buyer and concluded that continued operation was no longer viable.

Funshop's closure was seen as a bellwether for Korea's vertical commerce sector — specialty online malls that had survived for decades suddenly found themselves squeezed between Korean platforms and Chinese discounters. Other kidult and hobby e-commerce sites like Babosarang and 1300k faced similar pressures.

Why it happened

  • Chinese e-commerce platforms AliExpress and Temu undercut Funshop's pricing on imported and collectible goods, destroying the price competitiveness that had sustained its curated model.
  • Coupang and other large platforms captured general e-commerce demand with faster delivery and broader selection, leaving Funshop's niche too small to survive as a standalone business.
  • After 23 years, CJ ENM chose to terminate the service rather than invest further in a vertical commerce model that had lost its competitive moat to the twin pressures of Korean and Chinese platforms.

The lesson

A vertical commerce brand with loyal customers cannot survive platform economics — when Chinese discounters and Korean incumbents squeeze both sides, curation alone cannot sustain standalone business.

Aftermath

Funshop's service ended on 1 March 2025 during a CJ ENM restructuring. The closure triggered discussions about Korean vertical commerce viability, as other specialty malls including Babosarang and 1300k faced similar Chinese e-commerce pressure. Funshop's 23-year kidult e-commerce legacy was commemorated by loyal customers, but curation and offline experience could not overcome the structural shift in e-commerce economics.
