Brantano went from 286 stores to zero — a Belgian shoe chain bankrupted three times

Brantano grew from a cobbler's factory shop to 286 stores — then UK administration, parent bankruptcy, and final liquidation killed it.

What happened

Brantano was founded in 1962 by André Brantegem in Lede, Belgium. The son of a cobbler, Brantegem ran a small ladies' shoe factory with his brother and opened a retail outlet at the factory — the first Brantano store. The chain grew steadily across Belgium and expanded internationally, reaching 286 stores at its peak with nearly 3,000 employees and annual revenue of €295 million.

In 2007, Dutch holding company Macintosh Retail Group acquired Brantano. The new owners pushed international expansion, but the UK division struggled. In 2015, Macintosh sold Brantano UK to Alteri Investors. Just two years later, in March 2017, Brantano UK entered administration. All UK stores closed by June 2017, with over 900 jobs lost.

Macintosh sold the remaining Brantano business to Belgian fashion group FNG N.V. in 2018. FNG itself was struggling — it filed for bankruptcy in July 2020. A relaunch attempt failed, and FNG filed for bankruptcy a second time in February 2022, leading to the final liquidation of all Brantano assets. The shoe chain that began as a cobbler's factory shop had been bankrupted three times in five years.

Why it happened

  • Macintosh pushed international expansion that the UK division could not sustain — when the UK stores failed, the whole chain was weakened.
  • Alteri Investors bought Brantano UK but could not turn it around — the chain was already too far gone when they took over.
  • FNG N.V. was a distressed buyer that could not save Brantano — it was already heading toward its own bankruptcy when it acquired the brand.

The lesson

A chain sold to three owners in a decade is not being rescued — it is being passed along until the last one drops it.

Aftermath

Brantano UK closed in June 2017 with the loss of over 900 jobs. The remaining Belgian and European stores continued under FNG N.V. until that company filed for bankruptcy in July 2020. A relaunch attempt failed, and FNG filed for bankruptcy a second time in February 2022, leading to the final liquidation of all Brantano assets. The brand that began as a cobbler's factory shop in 1962 no longer exists.
