Blue Beetle opened to $25M on a $100M+ budget — the softest DC start in years

Warner Bros spent $100M+ on a superhero nobody had heard of; Blue Beetle opened to $25.4M and closed at $130.8M worldwide, the third DC stumble of 2023.

What happened

Blue Beetle was meant to keep the DC machine running between franchise rebuilds: an origin story of Jaime Reyes, a minor comic character, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto. Warner Bros. spent over $100M producing it — reported budgets ran $104–125M — and released it August 18, 2023, in the long box-office shadow of Barbie and Oppenheimer.

It opened to $25.4M domestically, one of the softest starts in the DC cinematic universe's history, and closed at $130.8M worldwide. Warner Bros. pointed at Tropical Storm Hilary, which hit Southern California on opening weekend; the market pointed at superhero fatigue — 'after a dozen nearly flawless years,' analyst David A. Gross said, the genre had performed unevenly for three and a half years. It was the third consecutive DC film of 2023 to stumble out of the gate, after Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash.

Why it happened

  • The film carried a $100M+ budget on a character with no public awareness — the origin-story tax paid without any franchise equity to offset it.
  • The release date put an untested property against Barbie's hold on the summer audience; there was no gap in the calendar where it could have been the only option.
  • The studio's defense — blaming the storm — revealed there was no plan B: no repositioning and no second audience to chase after a soft open.

The lesson

Awareness is a budget line. A $100M production behind an unknown character spends most of its money telling people the film exists — and if that fails, nothing else saves it.
