AI fashion stylist startup Allē shut down after six pivots and no product-market fit

Elevation Capital-backed AI fashion stylist Allē, founded by ex-Meesho executives, shut down in January 2026 after six pivots and no viable business.

What happened

Allē, an Elevation Capital-backed AI fashion stylist startup, shut down in January 2026, becoming the first startup to announce a shutdown that year. The platform let users chat with a conversational bot that acted as a personal stylist, pulling outfit ideas from more than 1,000 brands, and claimed more than 1.5 million Gen Z shoppers.

The company was founded in January 2023 by Prateek Agarwal, Harshit Madan and Pavan Patil, three former executives of e-commerce firm Meesho. It raised $3 million in seed funding in December 2023 from Elevation Capital, Bharat Founders Fund and The Singhal Children.

Over its 2.5 years of operation the team pivoted six times, each time believing it was getting closer to a large enough opportunity. Co-founder Agarwal eventually wrote that the founders had to accept that the opportunity cost of everyone's time outweighed another uncertain pivot.

The decision to shut down was taken in October 2025, and the app had been removed from the app stores shortly before the January 2026 announcement. Co-founders Madan and Patil had exited the venture in October 2025, with Patil rejoining Meesho as director of engineering a month later.

Why it happened

  • The team kept chasing a larger consumer opportunity through fresh pivots instead of committing to a business model, so six reframes never converged on something that could make money.
  • An AI-first consumer product in fashion faced sharp competitor pressure and thin margins, and the founders never demonstrated a unit economics that justified the engineering spend.
  • The founders framed the decision as opportunity cost: every additional pivot consumed the team's time and capital for an outcome that kept failing to arrive.

The lesson

Pivoting is only a strategy if each turn narrows toward a market, not if it reframes the same unsolved bet — when a team has already reframed the product six times, the honest next pivot is to stop.

Aftermath

Allē wound down in early 2026 and its app was removed from app stores. Co-founder Pavan Patil rejoined Meesho as director of engineering in November 2025, a month before the e-commerce firm's public debut. The shutdown added to a 2025 pattern of Indian AI startups, including subtl.ai, CodeParrot and Astra, closing for lack of product-market fit.
