Air India's 'The Vista' rebrand swapped its swan and chakra for a gold window frame

Tata's 2023 rebrand retired the Flying Swan and Konark Chakra in favor of a global minimalist look. Designers called it culturally generic.

What happened

On 10 August 2023 Air India unveiled a new brand identity under Tata Group ownership, replacing the long-standing Flying Swan and Konark Chakra with a gold window-frame symbol called 'The Vista'. The airline said the mark signified a 'Window of Possibilities' and positioned Air India as a premium global carrier.

The rebrand was designed by FutureBrand and included a new livery in deep red, aubergine and gold, a custom typeface named Air India Sans, and a redesigned Maharaja mascot limited mainly to premium touchpoints. Tata also announced a $70 billion aircraft order and a $400 million cabin refurbishment program.

Design critics and aviation observers responded that the identity looked generically global and bore a close resemblance to Vistara, Tata's other airline. The move was seen as trading distinctive Indian symbols for a minimalist system that could belong to any airline.

Why it happened

  • The new identity replaced immediately recognizable Indian iconography with a geometric window frame that carried no specific cultural meaning.
  • Tata already operated Vistara with a similar red-and-white premium identity, so the new Air India looked like a sibling rather than a flag carrier.
  • The rebrand was launched alongside operational turnaround investments, making the visual change read as premature before service quality had caught up.

The lesson

A global look that erases the visual cues that made you distinctive can make a national carrier interchangeable.
