Ahlers, the 100-year-old German menswear group behind Baldessarini, files for insolvency
Century-old Herford menswear group Ahlers AG files insolvency applications in April 2023, dragging Baldessarini and six subsidiaries with it
Ahlers AG · 2023-04-24
What happened
Ahlers AG was a roughly one-century-old German menswear group based in Herford, built around a portfolio of classic men's clothing brands including Baldessarini, Pierre Cardin, Pioneer Jeans, Pionier Berufskleidung and Otto Kern. It sold through its own retail, wholesale and the department-store channel.
On Monday 24 April 2023 the Vorstand decided to file insolvency applications for Ahlers AG and the subsidiary Ahlers P.C. GmbH because of drohende Zahlungsunfähigkeit (threatened insolvency). Six further group companies followed: Ahlers Retail GmbH, Ahlers Zentralverwaltung GmbH, Ahlers Vertrieb GmbH, Pionier Berufskleidung GmbH, Pioneer Jeans-Bekleidung GmbH and Baldessarini GmbH.
The collapse came after years of declining sales in the group's core classic menswear, a failed restructuring and the broader crisis of the German clothing retail market. Restructuring firm Biner Bähr was brought in to manage the proceedings.
Why it happened
- Years of declining demand for classic menswear eroded the group's revenue faster than it could adapt
- A restructuring effort failed to restore profitability, leaving the group unable to refinance its way out
- The broader German clothing retail crisis removed the cushion that might have carried the group through
The lesson
A century-old brand portfolio does not protect a retailer from a structural decline in its category. When the core stops selling and the restructuring fails, the whole group goes under.
Aftermath
On 24 April 2023 the Vorstand filed insolvency applications for Ahlers AG, Ahlers P.C. GmbH and six group companies, including Baldessarini. Restructuring administrator Biner Bähr took over the proceedings as the group's classic menswear brands were dismantled or sold.
