Wendy's floated surge pricing and the backlash forced it to swear it never would

A CEO throwaway about 'dynamic pricing' on an earnings call read as surge-priced burgers to an inflation-weary public, and Wendy's spent a week walking it back.

怎么回事

On Wendy's Q4 2023 earnings call in February 2024, CEO Kirk Tanner said the chain would spend $20 million on digital menu boards and, 'beginning as early as 2025', would test 'dynamic pricing' — adjusting prices by demand and time of day, Uber-style.

The phrase detonated. In a country where fast-food prices had risen almost 30 percent in four years, 'surge pricing' read as price gouging on basic meals. Social media boiled over — 'surge pricing is just price gouging by any other name' — and the story ran nationwide within a day.

Wendy's spent the following week walking it back. In a February 28 statement it called the reports 'misconstrued', insisting the menu boards would only ever be used to offer discounts and value at slow times, never to raise prices at peak demand: 'We have no plans to do that and would not raise prices when our customers are visiting us most.'

The damage was already done. Burger King waded in with a free-Whopper 'No Urge to Surge' promotion, and YouGov measured the episode as overwhelmingly negative for the brand. Wendy's had handed a skeptical public a reason to trust it less, over a capability it had not even built yet.

为什么会这样

  • The CEO named an Uber-era concept — 'dynamic pricing' — which consumers translate instantly as 'surge pricing', the most inflamed price phrase in the language
  • It was aired into an inflation-hot economy where everyday meals were the most price-sensitive purchase in Americans' lives, so the framing did the damage before any policy existed
  • Wendy's frame-first 'misconstrued' defense read as a retreat, letting critics and competitors define the story instead of it
  • Competitors immediately weaponized the misstep, turning Wendy's one bad call into a free marketing win for Burger King

教训

When the price a customer pays is a sore point, announcing 'dynamic pricing' hands them a reason to be angry at you — say what you will not do, before the market invents what you might.

后来呢

Wendy's never did raise prices by demand, and 'surge pricing' was quietly retired from its vocabulary. But the episode became the textbook example of how fast-food pricing experiments get pre-emptively killed by consumer anger, and it handed every competitor a free way to pose as the customer-friendly alternative.
