Vanity Fair's new editor cut its critics a month into the job

Mark Guiducci pivoted Vanity Fair from trade coverage to Hollywood glamour, laying off four veteran critics five weeks into the role.

对今天的意义

Any media brand pivoting to social platforms should ask whether it's rebuilding around new strengths or just discarding the specialist coverage that earned its credibility in the first place.

怎么回事

In April 2025, Radhika Jones announced she would step down as Vanity Fair's editor after seven years in the role. Anna Wintour championed Mark Guiducci — a former Vogue creative editorial director and a close friend of Wintour's daughter — as the magazine's first global editorial director, reportedly over reservations attributed to Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch. Guiducci took over on June 30, 2025.

He inherited a newsroom already thinned by 2024 layoffs and what insiders called a year-long slow drip of departures. On August 12, roughly six weeks into the job, four longtime staffers — critic Richard Lawson, David Canfield, Anthony Breznican and Michael Calderone — were laid off as Guiducci sent staff a memo pivoting away from the Hive vertical, which covered politics, business and tech, and away from "news aggregation, reviews, and trade coverage," toward Hollywood, celebrity, money, politics and style content built for newsletters, TikTok and platforms that don't exist yet.

Guiducci framed the cuts as part of a rebuild rather than a retreat: alongside the layoffs he announced plans to hire 13 new staffers, including three regional correspondents and a global creative director. But people inside the magazine described morale as already low before he arrived, and the reshuffle read to several of them less as a fresh start than as confirmation that the Jones era was over.

为什么会这样

  • Condé Nast let two rounds of layoffs land on the same masthead within about a year without refilling roles vacated the first time, so the newsroom was stretched thin before the second cut.
  • A leadership pick chosen partly for its fit with the Wintour era, over reservations attributed to the company's own CEO, added uncertainty about the process on top of the layoffs that followed.
  • Cutting critic and reporter roles built over years of expertise, in favor of output built for social platforms, trades hard-won credibility for content competing directly with unpaid creators.

教训

Replacing expert critics with newsletters and TikTok content only works if the audience that trusted those critics follows — and by the time you find out, the critics are already gone.

后来呢

Guiducci's rebuild continued through the rest of 2025: recruiting for a global creative director and new Hollywood, Washington and style correspondents, alongside a stripped-back print redesign focused on the magazine's traditional pillars. Whether the pivot offset the loss of specialist coverage remained an open question.
