Tucktonia drew 500,000 a year to a miniature Britain — until the real theme parks arrived

Opened in 1976 with 200 miniature British landmarks, the Dorset park closed in 1986 — outgrown by the theme-park giants it helped pioneer.

怎么回事

Tucktonia opened on 23 May 1976 on Stour Road in Christchurch, Dorset — the creation of Harry Stiller, a former British Formula Three champion who had seen a miniature park in Holland. Its centrepiece was 'The Best of Britain in Miniature': more than 200 models at 1:24 scale, from Buckingham Palace to Tower Bridge, on four acres of a larger leisure complex with rides, a boating lake and a miniature railway. Comedian Arthur Askey cut the ribbon, and in the early years half a million people came every year.

Then the big parks came: Thorpe Park opened in 1979 and Alton Towers in 1980, and a miniature village suddenly felt small. Ownership changed hands several times, investment lagged, and the park grew run-down. When the owners applied to build a roller coaster to fight back, the council refused permission.

Tucktonia closed in 1986 — a year after an approved £10 million relocation scheme was abandoned. The site became a pub, then a bar, then was demolished in 2003 for housing. Most of the models were destroyed in a warehouse fire; the Buckingham Palace model survived and now stands at Merrivale Model Village in Great Yarmouth, and the miniature railway still runs at Moors Valley Country Park.

为什么会这样

  • Thorpe Park and Alton Towers redefined what a day out was — a miniature village could not compete with real rides.
  • A string of owners let investment lag; the one attempt to modernise, a roller coaster, was refused planning permission.
  • The £10 million rescue scheme was approved but abandoned, leaving a park with no future and no rescuer.

教训

Tucktonia drew half a million a year with miniature Britain. But small attractions age fast: when the big parks arrived, a refused coaster and an abandoned rescue plan finished it.

后来呢

The miniature railway runs at Moors Valley Country Park; the Buckingham Palace model stands at Merrivale Model Village in Great Yarmouth.
