Tomorrowland: the $190M Brad Bird original that never became a franchise

Disney spent $190M on Brad Bird's Tomorrowland, which grossed $208.4M worldwide and was expected to lose $120–150M — one of the biggest bombs of 2015.

怎么回事

Tomorrowland was Disney's $190 million bet on a Brad Bird original sci-fi, starring George Clooney, intended to seed a new franchise from wholly owned IP rather than a licensed one. Bird was coming off the success of Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, and the studio gave him a tentpole budget.

It opened May 22, 2015 to a weak $32.7 million domestic weekend and collapsed from there, closing at $208.4 million worldwide. Because the marketing brought the total bill to around $340 million, analysts and the studio expected a loss of $120–150 million.

The Hollywood Reporter counted Tomorrowland among the five biggest box-office flops of summer 2015, alongside Pan, and the intended franchise never materialized. It stands as one of the most expensive misses in Disney's modern live-action slate.

为什么会这样

  • A $190M tentpole was built on an original, murky premise rather than a proven property, so the opening weekend carried the entire risk before audiences could decide.
  • The story failed to land — reviews were mixed and the film never found the younger male audience a franchise launch needs, so a soft opening never recovered.
  • The marketing bill roughly matched the budget, so the $208.4M gross had to cover near $340M of spend — a gap no theatrical run could close.
代价$190M budget vs $208.4M gross; $120–150M loss代价高昂

教训

Disney spent $190M on Tomorrowland, an original sci-fi that grossed $208.4M but lost $120–150M once marketing was counted. A tentpole on an unproven idea needs a premise audiences get on day one.
