Terra Mítica cost €420M, opened late, and suspended payments in four years
Valencia's flagship theme park ran €150M over budget, opened in July 2000, and filed the Spanish equivalent of bankruptcy in May 2004 under €218M of debt.

怎么回事
Terra Mítica was the emblematic project of Eduardo Zaplana, president of the Valencian regional government from 1995 to 2002: a theme park of ancient Mediterranean civilisations at Benidorm. Budgeted at €270 million, it opened on 27 July 2000 having cost €420 million — a €150 million overrun.
The gate never serviced the debt. From opening until restructuring the park lost on average €8 million a year in operating terms, accumulating losses above €150 million. In May 2004, with €218 million of liabilities — including €83 million still owed on a 1999 syndicated loan — Terra Mítica filed suspensión de pagos, the Spanish equivalent of bankruptcy protection.
A Paramount Parks management deal from 2001 had not turned the gate around. Debts were eventually worked down by selling unused park land, and the park produced positive EBITDA in 2006 after emerging from receivership — a smaller park than the one Valencia had built.
