怎么回事

Terminator: Dark Fate — directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool) and produced by Skydance with James Cameron as a hands-on producer, reuniting Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger — was the franchise's third attempted restart, and the most expensive: $185–196 million.

Released November 1, 2019, it grossed $261 million worldwide — less than half of what a film with this budget and this marketing needed. Deadline's annual cost analysis calculated a net loss of $122.6 million, one of the biggest bombs of 2019.

The failure ended the franchise's theatrical run: the rights reverted to Cameron in 2024 with no new film in development, and Dark Fate became the third Terminator movie in a row to lose money after Terminator 3, Salvation and Genisys — a series that kept betting bigger on a property audiences had stopped believing in.

为什么会这样

  • The franchise had burned its goodwill across three failed restarts: Genisys (2015) already killed the brand, and a fourth attempt at $185–196M asked audiences to reinvest in a story.
  • The budget was set by nostalgia, not by demand: Cameron's return and Hamilton's comeback were meant to guarantee a hit, but nostalgia does not compound.
  • The film's premise rejected its own fans: killing off John Connor in the first act alienated the core Terminator audience, and a $196M film that starts by disappointing its base.
代价Net loss $122.6M; $261M gross vs $185–196M budget代价高昂

教训

Three failed restarts are a verdict, not a pattern: Terminator's fourth attempt at $185–196M lost $122.6M, because nostalgia for the original cannot survive the franchise's own record.
