Skol's Carnival posters said 'I left my no at home' — the slogan had to be rewritten

February 2015: Skol's Carnival posters joked about forgetting one's refusal at home. Accused of trivializing consent, Ambev replaced the phrases within days.

怎么回事

For Carnival 2015, Skol — Ambev's flagship beer and Brazil's best-selling brand — ran a campaign called 'Viva RedONdo', built on saying yes to life's invitations. Its posters carried slogans such as 'deixei o não em casa' (I left my 'no' at home) and 'topo antes de saber a pergunta' (I say yes before hearing the question).

A Facebook post accused the campaign of making light of refusal during Carnival — the week when street harassment of women at blocos is a national public debate — and the complaint spread across social media and the press. Critics read 'leaving your no at home' as a joke about a woman's refusal not counting.

On 11 February 2015, mid-Carnival, Ambev announced it would replace the phrases with 'clearer and more positive messages' carrying the same concept. Its statement said the company 'repudia todo e qualquer ato de violência seja física ou emocional' and thanked users for the warning. A national campaign was rewritten in the middle of the week it was made for.

为什么会这样

  • The slogan only worked if a refusal was ignored; in the context of Carnival harassment, what read as playful to the brand read as a threat to the audience.
  • The campaign cleared creative review without anyone asking how the phrase would be read by the person whose 'no' it was about.
  • Carnival week compresses the news cycle: a complaint posted one day was a national campaign rewrite two days later.

教训

A joke built on someone else's refusal reads as a threat to them — test the slogan from the audience's side, not the brand's, and correct faster than the festival spreads.

后来呢

Ambev kept the 'Viva RedONdo' platform with new copy, and the case became a standard reference in Brazilian marketing courses for campaigns that misread a social debate. Later Carnival seasons saw breweries run consent-aware messaging instead.
