A budget that doubled to $160M and a lawsuit with its own author sank Sahara

Sahara's cost ballooned from $80M to $160M during filming, grossed only $119M, and the studio then sued the author over his book sales claims.

怎么回事

Philip Anschutz's Bristol Bay Productions paid $10 million for the film rights to Clive Cussler's novel Sahara and, unusually, granted Cussler creative control over the script, director and cast selection as part of the deal, a concession the studio would come to regret.

Production costs doubled during filming, from an original $80 million estimate to roughly $160 million, as the arrangement with Cussler and other production issues extended the shoot and inflated the budget well past its original plan.

Sahara grossed about $119 million worldwide, recovering only a fraction of its roughly $240 million combined production and distribution cost. The studio then sued Cussler for fraud, alleging he had inflated his book sales figures to secure the deal; a jury found Cussler had breached his contract and ordered him to pay $5 million, later increased to $13.9 million in legal fees.

为什么会这样

  • The studio granted an author creative control over casting and director without a mechanism to contain the cost of accommodating his demands.
  • Nobody capped the budget as production costs doubled during filming under the terms of that arrangement.
  • The studio didn't verify the book sales figures underpinning the original deal before signing away creative control based on them.
  • A costly legal fight after release added further expense on top of the theatrical loss rather than resolving it.

教训

Handing a source-material author creative control over a big-budget production removes the studio's ability to contain costs when disputes arise.

后来呢

The extended legal battle between Cussler and the production company became a widely cited cautionary tale in Hollywood about granting authors contractual creative control on studio-scale adaptations.
