EMI signed Robbie Williams for £80M, then barely promoted the album that followed
Rudebox sold so poorly against his back catalog that unsold copies were reportedly shipped to China and crushed into road-building material.

怎么回事
EMI signed Robbie Williams to a four-album contract reportedly worth £80 million, one of the largest recording deals in UK music history, betting his commercial track record would keep delivering album sales at the scale of his prior releases.
For his seventh studio album, Rudebox, Williams shifted from the pop sound that built his career toward electro and dance influences, a stylistic departure the label reportedly supported with minimal advertising, no supporting tour and few interviews.
The album and its title single were panned critically — The Sun called the single 'the worst in history' — and sales fell far short of his catalog norm under the £80M deal. Reports said over a million printed but unsold copies were shipped to China and crushed for use in road and lighting construction materials.
为什么会这样
- The label locked in a nine-figure, multi-album commitment without a mechanism to adjust if an individual album's direction changed sharply.
- Approving a major stylistic pivot without matching it with a promotional campaign left the album with no support to find its new audience.
- No tour or press push meant the album had no path to recover from its poor initial reception.
- The mismatch between the deal's scale and the actual promotional investment signaled the label wasn't confident in the release even before it shipped.
教训
A nine-figure contract doesn't protect an album that the label itself declines to promote once it takes a creative risk.
后来呢
Rudebox became a standard reference point in UK music coverage for the gap between artist contract value and actual commercial support, and Williams later returned to more conventional pop territory for subsequent releases.
