Progressive sidelined Flo for AI-generated animals — viewers called it 'AI slop'

Progressive's ad swapped its mascot for AI-generated animals. Viewers called the animation cheap and soulless, even with Flo's own voice narrating.

怎么回事

In November 2025, Progressive Insurance released 'Drive Like an Animal,' an AI-generated ad promoting its Snapshot usage-based insurance program. Instead of its two-decade-old mascot Flo appearing on screen, the spot showed AI-generated animals navigating traffic, narrated by Stephanie Courtney — the actress who plays Flo — in voiceover.

The reasoning inside Progressive's marketing team was that animals suit the cartoonish look AI video generation still produces better than human figures do, reducing the uncanny-valley effect that has tripped up other brands' AI ads. Viewers disagreed with the tradeoff: comments called the animation 'AI slop,' 'soulless,' 'terrible' and 'garbage,' with several noting that traditional animation from decades earlier looked more convincing.

Progressive kept the ad running rather than pulling it, treating the backlash as part of an ongoing, deliberate experiment in balancing AI production against the brand equity built around Flo's twenty-year run as a human, on-camera character.

为什么会这样

  • Replacing a two-decade human mascot with AI-generated animals removed the exact element — Flo's on-screen presence — that had built the brand recognition the ad was trying to borrow.
  • Choosing animals specifically to hide AI's weaknesses with human faces was a technical workaround, not a creative reason, optimizing for what AI could fake rather than what the message needed.
  • Keeping Flo's voice while removing her on-screen presence created a jarring gap between a trusted, familiar voice and unfamiliar, criticized visuals layered underneath it.

教训

Choosing an AI-friendly subject to hide the technology's weaknesses is a production decision, not a creative one — audiences notice when a brand optimizes around AI's limits rather than the message.

后来呢

The ad became a recurring reference point, alongside Coca-Cola's and other brands' AI holiday ads from the same period, in the broader 2025–2026 industry debate over how much visible AI production a legacy brand's mascot equity can absorb before viewers turn on it.
