Disney spent $300M trying to build a Pirates-style franchise from a video game

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time cost $200M plus a reported $100M in marketing, and its $336M gross still left Disney's own math in the red.

怎么回事

Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer adapted the Prince of Persia game franchise into a big-budget tentpole, explicitly hoping to replicate the Pirates of the Caribbean model of turning a game or ride into a long-running theatrical franchise, and committed a $200 million production budget plus a marketing spend reported as high as $100 million.

The film starred Jake Gyllenhaal and became the highest-grossing video-game adaptation of its time, earning positive reviews from critics for its action and effects, and closed with $336 million worldwide.

Despite the headline gross, Disney's own accounting told a different story once theaters' share and the full marketing spend were counted: the studio recovered only about $185 million of theatrical rentals against roughly $300 million in combined production and marketing costs, leaving most of the budget uncovered. Plans for a sequel and franchise were shelved.

为什么会这样

  • Disney greenlit a franchise plan modeled on Pirates of the Caribbean without validating a game IP could carry the same box office ceiling.
  • The marketing budget nearly matched the production budget, raising the bar for what the film needed to earn just to break even.
  • A headline-grossing number was allowed to overshadow the studio's actual net return once distribution costs were counted.
  • No fallback plan existed for a film that looked successful publicly but failed Disney's internal profitability bar.

教训

A gross that looks like a hit to the public can still be a loss once a studio counts its own marketing spend against it.

后来呢

Disney did not pursue a sequel despite the cast's interest, and Prince of Persia became a frequently cited example of the gap between a headline box office number and a studio's actual return.
