Pemberton Music Festival went bankrupt eight weeks before its gates opened

$22M budgeted, $8.2M collected, over $10M short: the festival filed bankruptcy on 18 May 2017, and ticket holders were told to queue as unsecured creditors.

Pemberton Music Festival LP · Huka Entertainment · 2017-05

怎么回事

The Pemberton Music Festival, held near Whistler in British Columbia and produced for its final years by Huka Entertainment under Pemberton Music Festival LP, had lost money for three consecutive seasons, with shareholders and investors covering the cash losses with several million dollars of their own.

For 2017 the partnership budgeted $22 million in expenses against $8.2 million in collected ticket revenue — a projected cash shortfall of over $10 million, driven by weak ticket sales, rising operating losses and a Canadian dollar that had been sliding against the US dollar since 2015. On 18 May 2017, eight weeks before the 13–16 July dates, the partnership filed for bankruptcy; Ernst & Young was appointed trustee, and Huka said the cancellation decision was not its own.

Ticket holders got no automatic refunds — the entity had 'no ability to provide refunds' — and were told to file proofs of claim as unsecured creditors or pursue chargebacks through their card issuers. At the time of the cancellation, everything except the $369 general tickets had sold out, which had not been enough to close the gap.

为什么会这样

  • Three losing years were normalised: investors kept covering the shortfall, so the 2017 budget was set as if year four would look like years one to three.
  • A $22M show on $8.2M of sales: the budget was nearly three times the money actually collected before the event.
  • Currency risk ignored: costs priced in a weakening Canadian dollar against US-dollar talent and suppliers widened the hole.
代价$10M+ shortfall; fans queued as creditors代价高昂

教训

A festival that loses money three years running is not unlucky, it is priced wrong. Pemberton budgeted $22M against $8.2M in sales and died eight weeks before its gates opened.

后来呢

Ernst & Young administered the estate; ticket holders filed claims alongside trade creditors. The Pemberton festival never returned, and the case became Canada's cautionary example of festival financing on investor patience.
