Luna Luna: the art amusement park that sat in shipping containers for 35 years

André Heller's 1987 art carnival of Dalí, Basquiat and Haring flop-ed into debt, then spent 35 years locked in Texas shipping containers.

Luna Luna (André Heller) · Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation · 1990

怎么回事

In the summer of 1987 André Heller opened Luna Luna, a carnival whose rides and pavilions were designed by Salvador Dalí, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney, on a Hamburg fairground. It drew roughly 240,000 to 300,000 visitors across a run extended twice.

Heller had planned a world tour but fell into debt funding the European leg, and in 1990 he sold the project to the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation for about $6 million. A 17-year legal dispute over title froze it, and from 2007 the art sat unopened in 44 shipping containers in rural Texas.

Michael Goldberg rediscovered the work in 2019, and Drake's DreamCrew bought the assets for roughly $15 million in 2022. It reopened as 'Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasia' in Los Angeles in December 2023.

为什么会这样

  • The project was built on prestige and expensive artist commissions with no reliable revenue model, so a stalled tour became a debt spiral.
  • Heller sold under financial pressure, and the ownership dispute that followed froze the art for 35 years — a failure that outlived the park itself.
  • The art outgrew the business: works worth rebuilding had been financed by borrowed money and one man's ambition rather than a plan to pay for itself.

教训

Spectacle is not a business: a park of masterpieces still needed paying visitors, and when the tour stalled the debt sat on the art for 35 years.

后来呢

The collection was finally opened to the public as 'Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasia' in Los Angeles in December 2023, after nearly four decades sealed away.
