Lululemon paid $500M for a fitness mirror — then wrote off $443M of it

Lululemon bought Mirror for $500M at home fitness' 2020 peak, booked a $443M impairment, and announced on 27 September 2023 it was ending it.

怎么回事

In the summer of 2020, with gyms shut and home-fitness demand exploding, Lululemon paid $500 million for Mirror, the New York startup whose $1,495 wall-mounted 'smart mirror' streamed workout classes through reflective glass. It was the athletic retailer's biggest acquisition ever, bought at the very top of the at-home fitness boom.

The boom ended and the hardware didn't. Sales disappointed, and by July 2023 Lululemon had laid off about 100 Lululemon Studio employees to refocus on content rather than devices. The reckoning came in two steps: a $443 million impairment charge on Mirror booked in its fourth-quarter results (announced March 2023), effectively writing off most of the purchase price, and then the end.

On 27 September 2023 Lululemon announced Mirror hardware would stop selling by the end of the year and struck a five-year partnership in which Peloton became the exclusive digital fitness content for Lululemon Studio while Lululemon became Peloton's primary apparel partner. Existing mirrors kept working; the app-only membership tier ended on 1 November 2023. The acquisition that was supposed to turn Lululemon into a fitness-platform company became a line item: roughly nine-tenths of the price, written down.

为什么会这样

  • The $500M price was paid at the peak of a pandemic demand spike that normalized as gyms reopened.
  • $1,495 hardware plus a subscription was a niche product; sales never approached what the valuation implied.
  • Lululemon is an apparel operator — running a hardware and content business was outside its capabilities.

教训

Lululemon bought Mirror for $500M at the peak of home fitness and wrote off $443M. Paying peak-boom prices for hardware you can't sell in a bust is how nine-tenths of a valuation disappears.

后来呢

Peloton supplies the fitness content for Lululemon Studio under a five-year deal; Mirror hardware sales ceased by end of 2023 with existing devices still supported.
