Paramount bet a movie trilogy on one Shyamalan script and killed it after film one

The Last Airbender adapted a beloved animated series with a whitewashed cast and a script critics called unwatchable, and the planned sequels never got made.

怎么回事

Paramount and Nickelodeon greenlit a live-action trilogy based on Avatar: The Last Airbender, a critically loved animated series with a large built-in fanbase, and handed the first film's script and direction to M. Night Shyamalan on the strength of his name alone.

The studio approved a cast that recast most of the source material's Asian and Indigenous-coded lead characters with white actors, drawing sustained public backlash before release, and let a script go into production that compressed a season of plot into voice-over dialogue.

The film opened to a $150 million budget and $319.7 million worldwide gross, a number that looked healthy until marketing and distribution costs were counted against it. Reviews were savage — Roger Ebert gave it half a star — and it swept the Razzies. Paramount quietly dropped the planned second and third films.

为什么会这样

  • The studio locked in a trilogy commitment before a single script had been tested with the built-in fanbase it was adapting from.
  • Casting decisions ignored the source material's characters and the backlash that followed was foreseeable, not a surprise.
  • Nobody stopped a script so compressed it relied on constant voice-over to explain plot the original series dramatized.
  • A nominal box office profit masked that the film's reception made a second installment commercially indefensible.

教训

A big gross doesn't rescue a franchise bet if the reviews make everyone afraid to greenlight the sequel.

后来呢

Paramount never made the planned second or third films. Netflix later produced its own live-action adaptation from scratch, treating the 2010 film as a cautionary example of what to avoid.
