Lionsgate cast Egyptian gods with a mostly white ensemble, and backlash hit before release

The franchise-starter drew a whitewashing backlash so loud both director and studio apologized, and it opened to $14M against a $140M budget.

怎么回事

Lionsgate greenlit Gods of Egypt as a planned franchise-starter set in ancient Egyptian mythology, casting predominantly white and light-skinned actors including Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the lead roles of Egyptian gods, on a production budget of about $140 million.

When trailers were released ahead of the film, the casting drew immediate and sustained public backlash for whitewashing a story rooted in African and Middle Eastern mythology, forcing both director Alex Proyas and Lionsgate to issue public apologies before the film had even opened.

Gods of Egypt opened to a weak $14 million domestically and closed with about $150 million worldwide — a number that still left the studio in the red once marketing and distribution costs were counted against the $140 million budget, and the planned franchise was scrapped.

为什么会这样

  • Casting decisions were locked in without anticipating how a mythology audience diverse in real life would react to the ensemble.
  • The studio didn't adjust course even after early trailer reactions signaled a serious reputational problem ahead of release.
  • A public apology issued before the release date couldn't undo the damage already done to opening-weekend anticipation.
  • The budget assumed a franchise-scale opening that the casting controversy made unreachable before a single review was published.

教训

A casting decision that draws backlash before release has already cost the film its opening weekend, no apology included.

后来呢

Gods of Egypt became a widely cited case study in Hollywood casting decisions, cited in later discussions of productions choosing more diverse casts for mythology-based films.
