Universal turned Doom into an action film with almost none of its horror, and it bombed
The $60-70M adaptation grossed just $58.7M worldwide, with Universal recovering only about $30.7M in theatrical rentals against the full cost.

怎么回事
Universal Pictures adapted id Software's Doom games into an action-horror film starring Dwayne Johnson and Karl Urban, moving the story away from the games' isolated survival-horror tension toward a more conventional military action format, on a budget reported between $60 and $70 million.
The finished film kept only a brief first-person-shooter sequence as a nod to the games, while critics and longtime fans said the rest abandoned the atmosphere and pacing that made the source material distinctive.
Doom opened to negative reviews and closed with $58.7 million worldwide box office, below its production budget alone before marketing and distribution costs. Universal's net theatrical return came to roughly $30.7 million, leaving most of the budget unrecovered.
为什么会这样
- The adaptation traded the games' core horror-survival tension for a generic action format without testing that choice with fans.
- The studio approved a budget of $60-70M against a genre and IP with a modest, not blockbuster-scale, box office ceiling.
- Marketing leaned on action stars rather than the atmosphere that made the games popular, mismatching audience expectations.
- Nobody adjusted the release plan even as the film's tone diverged further from the source material during production.
教训
Stripping the specific thing fans loved about a game just to fit a familiar genre template removes the reason they'd show up.
后来呢
No sequel followed, and Doom became a standard reference point in discussions of studios flattening a distinctive game's tone into generic action to broaden its appeal — and losing the built-in audience in the process.
