DisneyQuest promised Disney parks in 30 cities — Chicago killed it in two years
Disney's five-storey indoor theme parks were to reach 20–30 cities; the Chicago flagship closed on 4 September 2001 after two years of poor results.

怎么回事
DisneyQuest was Walt Disney Parks' answer to the city: five-storey indoor 'interactive theme parks' of simulators and virtual-reality attractions, meant to bring the Disney brand to people who would never travel to a resort. The original opened at Downtown Disney in Orlando on 19 June 1998; a second followed near Chicago's Michigan Avenue on 16 June 1999. Executives spoke of 20 to 30 locations worldwide.
Chicago never found its audience. The venue stood in a working downtown rather than a tourist district; suburban families faced traffic and steep parking, and on school days it ran half-empty. On 6 July 2001 Disney announced the park would close on 4 September. 'Expected returns on the investment required to achieve DisneyQuest's cutting-edge technology standard in a stand-alone environment will not meet the company's financial requirements,' said Randall Baumberger of Disney Regional Entertainment. About 270 jobs went.
The chain plan died with it. In Philadelphia, where construction had begun, the project was abandoned at the hole-in-the-ground stage; Disney had already said in 2000 that it would build no more. Orlando's DisneyQuest lingered on resort foot traffic until July 2017, sixteen years after the concept was written off.
为什么会这样
- The model assumed Disney-scale foot traffic would appear in any big city — but urban downtowns do not behave like resort districts.
- Each venue carried cutting-edge technology costs against a local admissions base; the returns only worked at resort volumes.
- The chain expanded from a prototype: Philadelphia broke ground before Chicago had proved the numbers.
教训
Disney tried to export the theme park as an urban retail format; the brand could not create foot traffic. The chain died with its second store, and the survivor ran sixteen years on resort traffic.
后来呢
The Chicago building became a Room & Board furniture store in 2003; Orlando's DisneyQuest was demolished for the NBA Experience. Disney's urban-entertainment push quietly ended.
