Discovery Island was Disney's animal retreat — Animal Kingdom made it redundant

Disney's 11.5-acre Discovery Island opened in 1974 and closed on 8 April 1999 — exactly 25 years later — a year after Animal Kingdom made it redundant.

Discovery Island · Walt Disney World · 1999-04

怎么回事

Discovery Island — originally Treasure Island — opened in Bay Lake on 8 April 1974: an 11.5-acre island reached by boat, with walking trails, tropical birds and other wildlife, a quiet zoological counterpoint to the Magic Kingdom across the water.

Its end arrived with Disney's Animal Kingdom in April 1998. Guests now had an entire theme park of animals, and a small boat-only island could not compete. Disney never officially explained the closure, but on 8 April 1999 — exactly 25 years to the day after opening — Discovery Island closed to the public. Operations continued briefly to relocate the animals to Animal Kingdom and accredited zoos, ending on 9 July 1999.

The island has stayed closed ever since, fenced and overgrown in plain sight of passing ferries, while its name lives on as the hub area of Animal Kingdom.

为什么会这样

  • Animal Kingdom gave guests the same animals at theme-park scale; the island lost its reason to exist.
  • Boat-only access capped the visitor count the island could ever serve.
  • Disney gave no official reason — the quiet closure of a redundant asset.

教训

Discovery Island survived 25 years until Disney opened a bigger version of it next door: Animal Kingdom made the island redundant overnight, and it has sat empty ever since.

后来呢

The island has remained closed and secured for over 25 years; Animal Kingdom's central hub kept the Discovery Island name.
