怎么回事

Devotion — the true story of Jesse Brown, the US Navy's first Black aviator, directed by J. D. Dillard and produced by Black Label Media with Sony's Columbia distributing — cost $90 million. It was positioned as a prestige war film for awards season.

Released November 23, 2022 in the Thanksgiving window, it grossed $21.8 million worldwide. Deadline's annual cost analysis calculated the net loss at $89.2 million, one of the biggest bombs of 2022 — the Thanksgiving weekend that year was the worst in modern box-office history.

The failure was timing as much as film: a $90M prestige drama needed an event opening, and it landed in a weekend where every film bombed — Strange World, The Fabelmans and Devotion all collapsed together, and a hero story worth telling became a $90M cautionary tale about release schedules.

为什么会这样

  • The release window was fatal: the 2022 Thanksgiving weekend was the worst in modern history, and a $90M drama opening into it had no path to the event numbers it needed.
  • The film had no awards momentum to save it: positive reviews were not enough to carry a prestige film against the season's stronger contenders, and the box office never recovered from its opening.
  • The budget priced a hit the genre had not delivered: war dramas had been a weak box-office category for years, and $90M on a story audiences admired but did not seek out.
代价Net loss $89.2M; $21.8M gross vs $90M budget代价高昂

教训

A hero story needs a release window: Devotion's $90M prestige drama opened into the worst Thanksgiving weekend in modern history — the schedule was the loss, before the film was even judged.
