Crystal Cruises owed its customers $100M when the ships got seized

怎么回事
Crystal Cruises was founded in 1988 by Japan's Nippon Yusen Kaisha and for three decades set the standard in luxury cruising, sailing Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity around the world. In May 2015 Genting Hong Kong bought the line for $550 million cash, near the top of the cruise market.
The pandemic stopped the fleet, and Genting's money stopped with it. In January 2022 Genting Hong Kong filed in Bermuda to work with provisional liquidators; Crystal suspended operations, and former president Jack Anderson said the parent had 'effectively washed their hands of Crystal', leaving the line with 'a bank account of zero'. In February US Marshals arrested Serenity and Symphony at Freeport in the Bahamas over $4.6 million of unpaid fuel bills, with passengers aboard.
The shutdown left customers owed more than $100 million in deposits and payments; US operations closed and the remaining staff were laid off on 11 February 2022. On 22 June 2022 A&K Travel Group bought the brand and the two ocean ships out of the wreckage, relaunching Crystal in July 2023 — a 34-year-old luxury name resurrected by someone else's balance sheet.
为什么会这样
- Ownership was the single point of failure: Crystal's cash lived at Genting, so the line went down when the parent did.
- The $550M price of 2015 left no cushion for two revenue-less pandemic years.
- The end was creditor-led: unpaid fuel bills, not strategy, decided where the ships stopped sailing.
教训
Crystal survived thirty years of cruising and two years of pandemic — what killed it was ownership: a subsidiary whose cash lives at the parent dies with the parent, $550M pedigree and all.
后来呢
A&K Travel Group relaunched Crystal with the same two ships in July 2023. Genting Hong Kong's liquidation stands as one of Asia's biggest pandemic casualties in tourism.
