Cats spent $95M on digital fur and still had to reship a fixed print days after release

Universal's CGI musical adaptation opened with unfinished visual effects, and $95M turned into a $113.6M loss.

怎么回事

Universal bet on director Tom Hooper's CGI-fur adaptation of the stage musical Cats as December counterprogramming against Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, spending roughly $95M on production. The digital fur render — human actors composited into cat bodies — was still being finished after the film had already premiered: Universal quietly sent theaters a technically updated print days after the December 16 premiere, an admission that the effects work was not done when critics and early audiences first saw it.

The reaction was immediate and public. Opening weekend gross was $6.5M, a fraction of the $15–20M pre-release projection, and the film placed fourth. Reviews and social media mockery of the uncanny digital fur — actors' faces on cat bodies with human hands and CGI tails — drove the collapse; there was no fix that arrived in time to change audience behavior.

Worldwide gross settled at $75.5M against a roughly $95M budget. Once marketing spend was factored in, Deadline's annual box-office accounting placed the net loss at $113.6M, ranking Cats among the biggest bombs of 2019.

为什么会这样

  • Universal locked a December release date before the digital fur effects were finished, shipping an unfinished cut to premiere audiences and critics.
  • The studio treated a technically unproven visual gimmick — human faces on CGI cat bodies — as a marketable centerpiece rather than a risk to test early.
  • Marketing built on secrecy and star casting couldn't survive the first wave of screenshots once the uncanny effects were visible to the public.
  • By the time a corrected print reached theaters, opening weekend had already set the film's trajectory.

教训

If the effects work isn't finished, the release date isn't real — critics and opening-weekend audiences only see it once.

后来呢

Cats became a punchline and a case study in visual-effects overreach; Universal absorbed the loss and the film was pulled from major awards conversations. Tom Hooper did not direct another studio feature for several years. The film's home-video release restored some of the unfinished shots as a curiosity, cementing its reputation as a film whose special effects were never actually finished on schedule.
