Candytopia sold tickets before it had a permit — LA shut it down within weeks of opening

Candytopia opened its first pop-up without the permit the venue required. The city shut it down days later, keeping ticket money it never delivered.

怎么回事

Candytopia, a candy-themed 'Instagram museum' pop-up created by TV personality Jackie Sorkin, opened in downtown Los Angeles in late 2017 alongside a sister exhibit, Happy Place, selling timed tickets to walk through oversized candy installations and a marshmallow pit built for photos. Both exhibits opened and began selling tickets without the temporary-use permits the city required for the venue.

On December 20, 2017, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety shut both exhibits down for operating without the necessary permits. Ticket holders who had already paid were not refunded, drawing public backlash on top of the closure itself. Candytopia relocated to Santa Monica to reopen under proper permitting.

The Santa Monica run itself proved temporary — Candytopia announced the end of that run in July 2018, months after its unpermitted-opening scandal in Los Angeles, before the brand went on to open other short-run city pop-ups in subsequent years.

为什么会这样

  • Building and selling tickets to a full installation before securing the permit the venue required meant the exhibit had no legal standing the moment the city checked.
  • Not refunding ticket holders when the show was forcibly closed converted a permitting failure into a consumer-trust failure on top of it.
  • Relocating to Santa Monica solved the permit problem but not the underlying pattern of opening fast and fixing paperwork after the fact.
  • A pop-up's short natural run length left little room to recover from a shutdown in its opening weeks — there was no long runway to rebuild trust before the exhibit's run ended anyway.

教训

Selling tickets to an event is a promise the venue exists legally, not just physically. Candytopia had the marshmallow pit built before it had the paperwork, and the city closed the gap.

后来呢

Candytopia relocated to Santa Monica and continued operating short-run pop-ups in other cities in subsequent years, but the unpermitted Los Angeles opening and unrefunded tickets set the pattern of public backlash that followed the brand through its early run.
