Camelot opened in 1983 near Chorley, Lancashire: a 140-acre Arthurian theme park that at its late-1980s peak drew 2.5 million visitors a year, passing through owners from Park Hall Leisure to Granada and Prime Resorts.
The slide lasted two decades: attendance fell to around 500,000 by 1995, 400,000 by 2000 and below 300,000 by 2009, despite a £3 million roller coaster, Knightmare, added in 2006. The final season was the wettest summer in 100 years, with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics on television eating into the peak months.
On 4 November 2012 Knights Leisure announced the park would not reopen, ending 29 years and more than 150 summer jobs. The site was abandoned; rides were sold off across Europe, and the shell of Knightmare stayed standing over a stalled plan for 350 homes.
