Cafe X's robot baristas drew crowds — the downtown stores still closed

怎么回事

Cafe X opened its first robot-barista cafe in San Francisco in 2017: a robotic arm brewed coffee and handed it out behind glass. The novelty drew crowds, lines and $14.5 million in funding, and the format spread to three downtown locations.

But the street-level stores proved an expensive experiment. On 7 January 2020 the company confirmed it was closing all three San Francisco locations. Founder Henry Hu framed it as graduation: the downtown stores 'helped Cafe X develop the machines now operating at SFO and San Jose Mineta airports.'

The retreat narrowed the company to airport kiosks — a bet that a robot barista earns its keep where footfall is captive, not where the rent is highest.

为什么会这样

  • Three downtown stores burned cash while doing the real work of testing hardware, software and beverages.
  • Airport queues suit a robot kiosk; street retail demanded volume the format could not sustain.
  • A novelty visit brings customers once — repeat economics at downtown rents never arrived.
代价$14.5M raised, 3 stores shut代价高昂

教训

Cafe X spent $14.5M learning that a robot barista belongs in an airport queue, not on a downtown street: three years and three San Francisco stores after launch, it kept only the airport machines.

后来呢

Cafe X continued with machines at SFO and San Jose airports, saying it planned to expand to more airports in 2020.
