Cadillac's $1,800 'Book' subscription paused after two years — too costly to deliver
GM's Cadillac launched a $1,800-a-month swap service in 2017, then paused it on December 1, 2018 — reportedly too costly to keep delivering cars each month.

怎么回事
Book by Cadillac launched in early 2017 as General Motors' answer to Rent the Runway for cars: for $1,800 a month, members could swap among Cadillac models, with registration, insurance, taxes, maintenance and unlimited mileage folded into the fee. The subscription aimed to turn a luxury brand into a service rather than a one-off purchase.
The pilot was expensive to run. Cadillac had built it as a test, and the logistics of delivering and picking up a different car for each member every month soaked up money. The Wall Street Journal reported that the service was ending because it was too costly to deliver multiple cars to each customer.
Cadillac paused the program effective December 1, 2018, saying it would use what it had learned to improve the experience and announce next steps later. It never relaunched. Competitors including Porsche Passport, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo's Care by Volvo pushed on, but Cadillac quietly shelved one of the first US car-subscription experiments.
为什么会这样
- The unit economics were impossible: $1,800 a month could not cover delivering a new car to every member every month.
- It was a pilot, not a business: launched to learn, Book had no clear path to profitability at its price point.
- The logistics of swapping cars nationwide were heavier than the revenue justified — the opposite of a software subscription.
- Cadillac bet on a feel-good brand story over a viable cost model, then killed it once the pilot's losses became clear.
教训
A subscription is only as strong as its unit economics. Swapping a car to each member monthly costs more than billing a licence, and a price that cannot cover delivery is a stunt, not a model.
后来呢
Cadillac paused Book effective December 1, 2018 and never restarted it. Rivals that launched around the same time, including Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, kept their subscription services running, while Cadillac returned to the conventional lease-and-purchase model.
