Director Terry Gilliam made The Adventures of Baron Munchausen on a production budget of about $46 million, an ambitious fantasy production already carrying tension from his prior clashes with studios over Brazil, with Columbia Pictures' David Puttnam securing the US distribution rights.
By the time the film was finished, Puttnam had been replaced as Columbia's CEO, and the new leadership showed little enthusiasm for a costly, troubled production they hadn't championed themselves, resulting in a very limited US theatrical release.
