A 50-year Tuscan shoemaker kept making shoes for brands that stopped paying it

怎么回事
Calzaturificio Altalena made shoes on Via Machiavelli in Castelfranco di Sotto, in Tuscany's Santa Croce leather district, for more than 50 years, in recent years concentrating its production on orders from emerging fashion brands rather than diversifying its client base.
Those clients increasingly did not pay on the terms the invoices required. Payment delays surfaced in July 2025; by August the company could not pay wages at all. It kept its fifteen employees, aged 30 to 60, working through both months without disclosing how close the shortfall was to shutting the factory down.
On September 4, 2025, workers were called in and handed termination letters. The factory closed immediately, ending more than half a century of production. Workers sought legal advice to recover unpaid wages; the mayor of Castelfranco offered the town's help mediating, but no rescue followed.
为什么会这样
- The business let itself depend on a narrow set of emerging-brand clients rather than a spread of buyers, so those clients' own cash-flow problems became the factory's problem directly.
- Management kept staff working through two months of payment failure — delayed wages, then none — instead of disclosing the shortfall before a same-day termination letter arrived.
- There was no credit-insurance or diversification buffer between a client failing to pay and the factory running out of money to make payroll.

A supplier concentrated in clients with thin margins is exposed to their cash problems as if they were its own — the exposure shows up as unpaid wages before it shows up as a headline.

The Via Machiavelli site did not reopen. Workers pursued legal claims for unpaid wages, and Castelfranco di Sotto's mayor offered municipal mediation support, but no buyer or restructuring followed the closure.
