What happened
Tomorrowland Brasil returned after a seven-year gap — the Belgian group had staged editions in 2015 and 2016 before its then-partner's financial troubles — with 250 million reais invested, tickets sold out in three hours, and an expected 206,000 people across October 12-14, 2023 in Itu, interior São Paulo. Then the first day fell apart: heavy rain flooded internal areas, car parks and access roads, while videos of mud, long queues, traffic chaos and parking mismanagement took over the festival's Brazilian social page.
On the Friday morning the organisers cancelled the second day: 'Due to the heavy storms, rains and flooding during yesterday, the internal areas of Tomorrowland, car parks and access roads are very damaged. We announce that the festival will not take place today,' the statement read, promising work overnight to reopen safely on the Saturday and details on refunds shortly.
The stakes were high for owner We Are One World, which had just turned its business around — an €18.6 million profit in 2022 reversing accumulated pandemic losses of €13.6 million from 2020 and 2021 — and for local partner DC Set Group. Sponsors included Ambev's Beck's, Beats, Pernod Ricard, Pepsi and Chandon.
Why it happened
The site's internal areas, parking and access routes were left unusable by the storms — infrastructure that 206,000 attendees depended on.
Day-one operational failures (queues, traffic, parking management) were already viral before the weather damage compounded them.
Cancelling day two became the least bad option: an unsafe or chaotic repeat risked far deeper brand damage than a refund.
The lesson
A festival's real product is site logistics: when the mud is on the front page, the lineup no longer matters — cancel before the crowd turns the brand into a meme.
Aftermath
The festival reopened on the Saturday as promised, with refund details pledged, but the cancellation of a sold-out day at a R$250 million event stood as the story of the edition — and of the gap between ticket demand and ground operations.
